BREAST REDUCTION

TREATMENT

BREAST REDUCTION

Breast reduction surgery can help to relieve the pain and discomfort associated with large breasts. When very large breasts are a concern, they often cause backache, neck pain, shoulder pain, and even rashes and soreness beneath the breast. Breast reduction surgery works by removing excess breast tissue to reduce the size and improve the shape of the breast. We may also find it necessary to lift the breast, as excessively large breasts may also be prone to sagging due to their weight and size. The size of the nipple may also require reduction so that it is more aesthetically balanced and proportionate to the smaller breasts.

On the day of your breast reduction procedure, your REAL surgeon will mark the breasts to indicate incision points. Depending on a number of factors, these incisions will be around the nipple, and vertically from the base of the breast to the nipple and will include a third incision along the inframammary crease to create an inverted T shape. Excess breast tissue will then be removed (the nipple will be supported by a length of breast tissue during the procedure, and then re-positioned according to the markings) as well as any excess skin before the wound is closed.

At REAL, breast reduction surgery is carried out under general anaesthetic. We use total intravenous anaesthesia as it has greater potential benefits compared to other forms of anaesthesia. Intravenous anaesthesia is more rapid in onset, and elimination which allows for speedier recovery. Further benefits include; increased haemodynamic stability (stabilised blood flow), decreased risk of organ toxicity, decrease in surgical haemostasis (bleeding), reduced risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting, and improved, more predictable recovery.

QUESTIONS OFTEN ASKED ABOUT BREAST REDUCTION

  • Are there any risks associated with breast reduction surgery?

The most common side effects with breast reduction surgery are; swelling, bruising, tenderness and discomfort which can be managed with pain relief. You will also be required to wear a supportive garment post surgery which will aid successful healing. Infrequently a patient may experience bleeding (haematoma), nipple necrosis, delayed healing and breast asymmetry. The visibility of scarring will vary and will be discussed with your REAL specialist before surgery. We will also advise suitable lifestyle choices that can help promote healing.

  • Is there any downtime associated with breast reduction surgery?

You can typically allow between 2-4 weeks to recover from breast reduction surgery. It would be advisable if possible to rest during this period and refrain from any stress inducing activities including going to work and driving. You should not travel abroad for at least 3 weeks post surgery, and should not resume activities such as going to the gym or sports for at least 12 weeks post surgery and steps toward increased activity levels should be taken slowly.
