LIPOSUCTION

TREATMENT

LIPOSUCTION

Liposuction is a popular surgical procedure that addresses localised areas of fat that are too stubborn to be shifted by diet and exercise alone. It is important to understand that liposuction (also referred to as liposculpture or lipo) is not a replacement for a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

Liposuction is a very versatile procedure that can be used to address many areas of the body including; the flanks, arms, thighs, stomach, back, buttocks, hips and chest. During the procedure small incisions will be made at suitable points, in which a cannula will be inserted. The cannula will be used to vigorously break up the fat. A device is then attached to the cannula that will assist with extracting the fat by way of suction. The incision points will then require some stitches to close and secure the wounds.

At REAL, liposuction is carried out under general anaesthetic. We use total intravenous anaesthesia as it has greater potential benefits compared to other forms of anaesthesia. Intravenous anaesthesia is more rapid in onset, and elimination which allows for speedier recovery. Further benefits include; increased haemodynamic stability (stabilised blood flow), decreased risk of organ toxicity, decrease in surgical haemostasis (bleeding), reduced risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting, and improved, more predictable recovery.

QUESTIONS OFTEN ASKED ABOUT LIPOSUCTION

  • Are there any risks associated with liposuction?

There is likely to be temporary numbness, swelling, bruising, tenderness and general discomfort following liposuction which can last around a month. There may be some small scarring following your surgery which is likely to fade over time. Other less common risks include; infection, numbness, rippling or dimpling, loose skin, fluid accumulation and bleeding. Your specialist at REAL will furnish you with an appropriate post surgery care pack to aid successful healing.

  • Is there any downtime associated with liposuction?

For approximately 6 weeks, post surgical garments will be necessary to be worn day and night following liposuction. It would be advisable if possible to rest for a few days following surgery and refrain from any stress inducing activities including going to work and driving. You should be able to return to work within a few days. You should not resume activities such as going to the gym or sports for around 4 weeks post surgery and steps toward increased activity levels should be taken slowly.
